Our senior pastor, Philip E Moore, was born in the town of Elkin, NC. He attended Maple Springs Baptist Church until the age of six when his family helped start Mount Calvary Baptist Church. God had been dealing with his heart for a number of months when he was saved as a nine year old boy at Mount Calvary. Philip attended C. B. Eller Elementary School and later attended East Wilkes High School. Following graduation, he attended Appalachian State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in History – Secondary Education, and graduating Cum Laude. In January of 1991, he married his high-school sweet heart, Angela Meadows, and following graduation settled in the Swan Creek community, where they attended Swan Creek Baptist Church and worked in the youth ministry, Sunday school and the missions program.
From 1992 – 1997, Philip taught at the North Surry High School, in Surry County. It was during this time that God began to deal with him about the call to preach. In June of 1995, God confirmed the call and Philip began preaching youth services and revivals as God opened doors of opportunity. In March of 1997, Temple Baptist Church, of Mount Airy, NC, called him to be Youth Director/Pastor. Feeling that this was God’s will, he resigned his teaching position and went on staff at Temple, where he served until March of 2000. It was in the early months of 1997 that the deacons of Cherry Grove contacted Philip about coming as pastor. After much prayer, God led the Moore family to the mountain. Having four children when they arrived on the mountain (Caleb, Isaac, Luke, Ethan), the Lord has blessed them with three “moore” additions (Abigail, Gideon, Lydia). Since the Moore’s arrived, the church has seen many souls saved, more than half a dozen young men called to preach, missionaries supported in over twenty states and fifty foreign countries, the beginning of a bus ministry, junior church, and the establishing of a Spanish church and English bible college. To God be the glory for all that He has done.
Our Spanish church is pastored by Brother Jesus "Chino" Rendon. He was born in Mexico and through the providence of God was brought to the state of Georgia, where he was gloriously saved in the 1990's. Called to preach a short time later, he received excellent training and discipleship by his American missionary pastor in Georgia. God was preparing him mightily for the work that lie ahead. Cherry Grove was privileged to ordain Brother Chino in 2006 and he has done a fantastic job carrying the work forward. Along with his wife Blanca, daughter Kimberly and son, Andrew, they serve a growing congregation. They have seen many converts and request that you keep them in your prayers as they faithfully serve the Spanish-speaking communities of our area.
